Commuter Fish Mural – Public Art Project commissioned by Cairns Regional Council 2017
-with India Collins
FROM THE ARTISTS:
Commuter Fish is a symbolic allegory of the commuting life in our region; people on bicycles, workers traveling in cars, fish swimming in the creek. Everything mobile, destined to be somewhere, the busy bustling movement of life.
The actual fish design is a made-up stylised representation, so as not to represent any one particular species.
The mechanical looking fish motif references the architectural construction that characterizes the Gordon Creek underpass, a reminder of the growing infrastructure in the region and the collision of both natural and man-made elements, and the delicate balance which must be respectfully obtained.
The work is a contemporary representation of flow and evolution, making the use of our thoroughfares, while paying consideration and homage to our beautiful environment.
